2020 Tiles Trends: Speckled Surfaces

We’re extending our celebration of National Tile Day another week with a spectacular 2020 tile trend: speckled tile surfaces.

Given postmodernism’s recent comeback in the world of design, it’s not surprising to see speckled surfaces as one of this year’s biggest tile trends. Look out for technicolor dots and specks, playful chips and fragments both large and small, modern interpretations of terrazzo, and more.

Instagram is already “speckled” with some alluring examples — check out a few of our favorites.

White Speckled Tile Looks

Reminiscent of splattered paint on a white canvas, these speckled tile examples have a whimsical quality about them. Note how the colors and amount of speckles play a significant part in the overall design. In the first photo, the sparsity of speckles give the porcelain slab countertop a lighter, airy feel. In the second photo, the greater density of speckles and darker tones lend a more moody vibe.

Gray Speckled Tile Looks

Gray is a welcome canvas for tile speckles, too. Whereas the first example is a colorful terrazzo look, the second is inspired by a natural stone from northern Italy — a design that looks great on multiple surfaces and in many shades (click through to see additional photos).

Black Speckled Tile Looks

These terrazzo-look tile examples feature white speckles on a black background for a classic color combo. Which do you prefer — the smaller, muted speckles of the first example or the brighter, chunkier speckles of the second?
